Active Pursuit

For better or worse, we live in the aftermath of human ambition.

People have the urge to explore ideas, spread art, gain power, start movements, accumulate wealth, make war, make peace, make love, and everything else in between. Our mixed bag of joy and sorrow proceeds from these goal-driven pursuits.

With focus and resolution, we bend the universe in the direction of our desires. Or we stumble along and fall towards whatever has the strongest pull.

Lately, my phone has had the strongest pull. I ease into distraction rather than sitting in discomfort. Without something specific to work towards my energy and attention are fractured and captured.

What’s the biggest goal you are actively pursuing?

I am actively working on becoming a better film editor. Currently working on my second feature-length documentary and working my way through a drama editing course to deepen my understanding of the craft.

Becoming “a better” editor is an open-ended journey. Ultimately, I want to feel more confident in my editorial choices and proud of what I put out into the world.

I have resisted setting goals because I usually fail to reach them. And on the occasions that I got what I thought I wanted, the happiness was fleeting if it existed at all. I have to remind myself that achieving the goal is not the point. Life just seems better when I am moving towards something.
